Power Management

When used with latest generation of Madge PCI token-ring adapters, the release supports Wake-on-LAN power management and Microsoft OnNow, two industry initiatives enabling network managers to control workstation power centrally. A PC that supports remote wake-up can remain available to a systems administrator during its normal downtime. Network managers considering migration to next generation operating systems such as Window 2000 can start to incorporate these comprehensive power management features by standardising now on Smart or RapidFire PCI token-ring adapters and Madge LSS9.2. For more information about power management, see Remote PC Wake-Up (Wake-On-LAN).

High Security Options

When used with adapters that support promiscuous mode operation, you can use Madge Software Support drivers with network analyzers and server applications that require the ability to receive all the packets on the ring.

The latest Madge adapters have the ability to permanently disable promiscuous mode using Assist or a driver parameter providing high security as they prevent desktop users from being able to monitor sensitive network traffic where this is an important issue. For more information about these security options, see About Promiscuous Mode.

DOS Memory Savings

To alleviate the limitations of conventional memory in DOS environments, Madge Support Software includes support for the Novell Client 32 architecture. This allows network drivers to be loaded into DOS extended memory freeing conventional memory for other applications.

To provide connectivity using 3270/5250 emulation, an IEEE 802.2 (LLC) protocol module is provided for the Client 32 environment. In addition, a NetBIOS protocol module for Client 32 is also provided to provide network connectivity for NetBIOS applications such as IBM DOS LAN Requester. This utility implements the NetBIOS API making use of the Client 32 LLC protocol and the 32-bit ODI driver. For more information, see Connecting Workstations to NetWare Servers Using Client 32.

Remote Boot Support

Several of our token-ring adapters include a BootRom socket. You can use BootRoms to add security and control to a large network. Further information about Madge BootRom support is available from www.madge.com.
